Mutual aid apps, explained
Mutual aid is people in a community helping each other directly, based on solidarity rather than charity. Apps can make it easier to find each other — but they make different choices about money and safety.

Three common models
| Model | How money moves | Typical safeguards |
|---|---|---|
| Local groups and boards | Often cash or direct transfer | Community knowledge |
| Crowdfunding platforms | Into a platform-held campaign | Platform payouts and policies |
| Direct-link apps like PayPlea | Directly to the recipient’s provider account | Moderation, private receipts, reports |
Where PayPlea fits
PayPlea is a person-to-person support app with swipe discovery. It does not organise local groups and does not hold funds. It focuses on clear, moderated requests and transparent progress.
Questions to ask any app
- Who holds the money, and when?
- Who reviews requests?
- What is public about me?
- Can I report and block?
- What happens if something goes wrong?
Safety box
Only send money you are comfortable giving. Check the recipient name shown by the provider, never pay with gift cards or crypto at someone’s request, and remember that many personal transfers cannot be reversed. PayPlea cannot recover money sent with an external provider.
